What to Expect at a Swim Meet
First some general info..We arrive and hold “warm-ups” at 5:00pm for our home meets. At the away meets, our warm-ups begin at 5:30pm. These are not required but it does give the swimmers an opportunity to get in and take a few laps before things get started. This does not mean you should arrive by these times, but that your swimmer should be on the deck and ready to dive in.
We encourage you all to arrive early – the meet starts promptly at 6pm. The later you arrive the farther away you will be parking and the more crowded the deck space is for you to find a home-base. There are 120+ swimmers on our team plus parents and siblings – times 2 with the opposing team - it is end to end people!
BRING: Chairs (you are welcome to those at the pool area but they go fast!), several towels (they get wet after an event or two...nothing worse than cold wet towels at the end of the night), snacks (there is a concessions stand and we encourage you to support these – ours funds our end-of-season party, but you might want to consider other items too), activities (cards, coloring books, games – keep in mind you are at a pool and things do get wet), and clothes (sweats or pj bottoms) for the swimmer to put on in case it gets chilly). ALSO...goggles, swim caps, Black Sharpie and sunscreen and any other items your swimmers might need. Please do not bring alcohol as it is not allowed inside the gate and can cause us to forfeit the meet.
Please note: You can not have any team logos for another team on a swimmer's bathing suit or swim cap (ex. Stingrays, Marietta Swim Team, etc.)
An overview....
There are 86 events at each meet – most with multiple heats. They run in the same order (girls/boys by age) each week – your swimmer will probably find themselves in the same numbered events each week – although the lane and heat could change.
The 5/6’s are finished after their 3 events at the mid-point of the meet (event 46). All swimmers are welcome to leave once they have completed their scheduled events – IF for some reason you must leave sooner, please let Sarah or Emily know. This impacts the rest of the line-up/team for the rest of the evening.
Each swimmer is eligible to swim in a maximum of 3 individual events (2 for the 5/6’s). These events include: 25, 50 or 100 Freestyle, 25 or 50 backstroke, 25 or 50 breaststroke, 25 or 50 butterfly or 100 Individual Medley (25 freestyle and backstroke for 5/6’s). They are also eligible for 2 relays (1 for the 5/6’s). Four swimmers are in each relay. These include: Medley Relay (each swimmer swims a different stroke) and the Free Relay (last event of each age group of the night – all four swimmers swim freestyle).
We do our best to include each swimmer in the maximum number of events. We are sometimes limited by the number of lanes and the abilities of our swimmers – if they are not proficient in enough strokes they may not swim in as many events.
On Thursday morning, each swimmer will be able to find the events they are swimming on the Swimtopia app. Please check the app throughout the day as we may have to make last minute changes due to sickness and emergencies.
On the Swimtopia you will find the Event #, Heat # and Lane # for each event that the swimmer is scheduled. When you read it, the first number is the event, the second number is the heat and the last number is the lane. From this you can also determine which stroke they swim and which end of the pool the swimmer should start from for relays. The coaches explain this to the swimmers, but it helps if the parents have an understanding too so you can help the swimmers to know what they are swimming and make sure they are at the appropriate position as needed. Please ask us if you need clarification.
We ask that all swimmers be in line at least 3 events before their scheduled event number. This means they must have been to the bathroom and have goggles and caps in place. A couple of us are working with the Lane Managers to ensure that each swimmer is in place – we will be looking to you to help get your swimmer where they need to be. You may wait in line with your swimmer if you/they like – so long as you do not interfere with the Lane Manager or Timer (it is a bit crowded). Or you may want to wait at the opposite end of the pool to watch them swim.
The meet will not wait for a swimmer...if they are not where they need to be they will miss their event!
Please remind your swimmer that we need to be respectful to the neighborhood and their facility. If your swimmer causes damage you will be responsible and no one wants that.
If there is bad weather (rain so hard that you can't see the bottom of the pool, lightning or thunder), the meet will be delayed. Just like practice it is a 30 minute delay for thunder and lightning. We have to clear the pool deck in the event of lightning and thunder. In this case, families will need to wait in their cars. We will update via Remind when it is clear to come back. We do ask that you do not leave the meet. Since most swimmers are in relays, it impacts everyone in your relay if you leave. We do our best to get the meet in so that we don't have to reschedule.
Be prepared – it is a bit hectic and crazy but lots of fun for everyone! If you have any additional questions let us know!
If you need to reach us on meet day, please call or text our cell phone.
